How has your company adapted in the last year to the changing needs of our community?

In October, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill launched her “Tomorrow, Together” initiative, a university-wide effort to inform strategic next steps for Penn. Led by a Red and Blue Advisory Committee comprised of faculty, “Tomorrow, Together” asks: What do our local, national, and global communities need from Penn, and how do we rise to the challenge of meeting those needs? Under the leadership of President Magill, addressing the changing needs of our City’s vibrant communities is central to Penn’s vision for the future.

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia 2022 saw the greatest increase in focused support for education, environment and sustainability, and employment and workforce development. As a supporter of one or more of these areas, share more about your company’s efforts.

As the nation’s first university, Penn remains steadfast in our commitment to greater educational access and equity across Philadelphia. Penn further solidified that commitment in 2022 with a five-year, $4.1 million partnership with Henry C. Lea Elementary School that will provide broad support for the school’s key initiatives and programs. Building on years of targeted engagement, including professional development for teachers, support for families, and resources for students, this long-term investment is just one example of Penn’s substantial support for education.

Across the board, community engagement was integrated into business functions, with the highest percentage in workplace DEI programs and marketing and PR. Share one or two examples how your company has led in this field.

Community engagement is a central component of Penn’s service mission. With approximately $1 billion in spending, one of the ways in which Penn engages with our community is through our supplier diversity and inclusion programs. One such program, the Fueling Business Growth initiative, aims to leverage Penn’s purchasing power to support local minority, LGBTQ+, veteran, and women-owned businesses. Through this program, Penn increases businesses opportunities and addresses challenges facing diverse suppliers, all to the mutual enrichment of the university and our community.

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program.

Firstrust Bank’s mission is to cultivate prosperity for its customers, employees, and the communities it serves. The bank was founded out of the civic engagement of Firstrust’s founder, Samuel A. Green, who in 1934 recognized the hardship for ordinary Philadelphians to secure a mortgage and own a home and decided to start a savings and loan association to support the needs of his community. Through neighbors’ support and his savings, he raised the necessary $7,000 to acquire the necessary federal charter, allowing community members an easier route to home ownership.

For nearly 90 years, Firstrust has remained committed to charitable efforts that enhance the Greater Philadelphia community focusing its social responsibility initiatives on education, health, children-at-risk, and programs that support our youth and their families.

Firstrust and its employees actively support Eagles Autism Challenge, Variety–The Children’s Charity, City Year of Greater Philadelphia, The Anti-Defamation League Philadelphia, and The Ronald McDonald House, among many others. Partnering with the Green Family Foundation, Firstrust assists in selecting students for the Samuel A. Green Scholarship Award Program, which has provided more than $1 million in scholarship awards to the region’s college-bound students for more than 50 years.

Firstrust also supports organizations that its employees are passionate about, and its employees eagerly volunteer at a variety of organizations in the communities where they live and work.

What are some of the key learnings you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

By participating in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia program, the volunteer work Firstrust’s employees do in the community was brought into focus. It is clear that Firstrust employees are dedicated to their community and are making a difference through their volunteerism.

The process has allowed Firstrust to develop a greater understanding of other corporate social responsibility initiatives in the region. Fostering connections with other Civic 50 honorees has opened the door to additional possibilities for the growth of Firstrust’s CSR initiatives.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia is a beneficial tool to assess and evaluate your company’s current civic engagement. Through participation you’ll be able to measure progress towards your goals, discover opportunities to improve, compare with peers in the region, and see where you are excelling. Firstrust encourages other companies that are committed to using their time, talent and resources to make an impact for their communities to take the Civic 50 to identify areas for growth and improvement.

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) employees have a strong commitment to the hospital and are deeply involved in its surrounding communities. Our commitment is the driving force for stepping outside our walls and volunteering to support communities served by the CHOP Care Network, which includes the entire southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey region.

CHOP’s Community Volunteering Program partners with community organizations to host volunteer activities that prioritize and help address the unique needs of our community. We use the Regional Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) as a guiding tool, making sure time and resources are spent where communities need them most. Every month, employees volunteer for activities, such as food distributions, health workshops and community wellness events, as well as on-going activities such as tutoring and mentoring. CHOP employees donate their time on weekdays, weekends and even holidays.

In addition to community volunteer activities, CHOP offers internal grant opportunities through the CHOP Cares Community Grant program. Since 2013, the program has

awarded 185 grants to CHOP employees. They volunteer their time, skills and knowledge to implement employee-led community programs that also help address health needs.

What are some of the key learnings you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

Participating in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia helped us identify areas for process improvement, from data collection to geographical reach. It has given us the opportunity to evaluate our work, celebrate our employee volunteers for their continuous support and desire to help others, and connect us even more to CHOP’s mission. Every day we strive to help children and families in our community live healthy lives.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

We recommend other agencies with civic engagement programs to join the CIVIC 50 Greater Philadelphia. Analyzing and breaking down data can help identify areas of improvement, gaps in our impact and reach, and reflect on all the great work we do. It allows us to be more intentional as we continue to serve our community.

Having participated in the Civic 50 for a second time, how have you incorporated your Civic 50 results into bettering your CSR program?

Since the company’s founding, 40 years ago, AmeriHealth Caritas associates have helped through volunteerism and mentoring, and philanthropic giving; outreach efforts that go beyond the provision of health care benefits and services.

The AmeriHealth Caritas Community Investment team connects 8,600 employees to opportunities that help to build healthy communities: supporting non-profit partners through a formalized volunteer and mentoring program and an annual associate fundraising campaign through Giving Together for the Community. In 2022, AmeriHealth Caritas partnered with 2,000 non-profit organizations – locally and nationally – to make a difference.

In 2022, 7,000 individuals participated in The Healthy Hoops ® signature health program that uses basketball as a platform to provide a fun, active learning environment for children ages 3 to 18. Power of Partnerships events bring together community leaders and organizations to explore how to connect individuals in need to community resources, and the Health Empowerment Tour is a customized program that educates the communities on topics such as diabetes, heart health, obesity, medication adherence, and mental health.

As AmeriHealth Caritas continues to grow and expand it’s national footprint, the CSR programs become increasingly more important in gaining entry into new markets.

Examples:

  • AmeriHealth Caritas uses the Civic 50 honoree status in promotional content to emphasize the importance of these efforts.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility attracts talent to the company and helps to retain associates.
  • Supports efforts to build and establish community partnerships.

How has your company adapted in the last year to the changing needs of our community?

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program

WSFS Bank supports a variety of events, initiatives and activities throughout the year that enhance the quality of life in our Communities, promote cultural diversity, involve civic leadership, and provide citizen education. We believe we have a responsibility to strengthen the cities and towns where we live, work, play and do business. A spirit of service is an integral part of WSFS’ culture and one of our core values. That way of thinking guides our volunteer and philanthropic efforts, a tradition that began in 1832 and continues today.

Team WSFS, our corporate volunteer program, provides planned opportunities and encourages Associates to volunteer with nonprofits of their choice by providing four paid hours per month to volunteer, and is proud of the impact to the Community over the years. Our dedicated Associates regularly provide financial education lessons to students throughout the Greater Philadelphia and Delaware region.

The WSFS CARES Foundation, the charitable giving arm of WSFS Bank, also helps bring WSFS’ mission of ‘We Stand for Service’ to life across the Communities we serve. The WSFS CARES Foundation’s key pillars of support are focused on Community investments; affordable housing; revitalization and business economic empowerment; education and leadership development; and strengthening those in need.

In 2021, we made approximately $2.2 million in total grants and donations, including more than $600,000 in large dollar grants to 15 organizations and more than $1,600,000 in contributions to 465 other charitable organizations; Associates logged 13,229 volunteer hours; and our annual food drive resulted in 66,000+ pounds of food donated.

What are some of the key learnings you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

Participating in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia enabled us to benchmark our efforts to help our Communities thrive and compare them to other companies in the region, and identify where we’re achieving our greatest successes and where there are areas of opportunity.

The Impact Report provided as part of the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia provided solid data surrounding our investment, integration, institutionalization, and impact of our Community efforts. This helped us to focus on areas of opportunity and continue to provide vital support to our Communities. Our dedicated Associates are the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to volunteerism and service; and the Impact Report backed up those efforts with hard data to show where our volunteerism stacks up. The report also emphasized the degree to which service and supporting the Community is integrated into WSFS’ business interests and functions to make a lasting impact in our Communities.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia is a great way to measure your company’s Community efforts with those of your peers in the region and identify strengths, weaknesses and areas of opportunity. Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program:

Across the Dow world, we embrace our opportunity to play an active role in strengthening communities where we live and work, including the Delaware Valley. Our global citizenship strategy directs our investments to accelerate social change and create a more sustainable and equitable future. Together with our community partners, we create social impact through the following strategic priorities:

  • Advancing Sustainable Solutions – We are seeking new, innovative ways to apply Dow products and technology for social good. Investments in this strategic pillar support Dow’s sustainability goals and prioritize funding aimed at creating circular economy solutions, such as informal and formal waste collection, and addressing climate change by targeting mitigation of climate change-related risks.
  • Building Inclusive Communities – Dow is building inclusive communities by activating Employee Resource Groups to address ID&E community needs, inspiring and empowering more inclusive learning environments and addressing systemic discrimination to accelerate change.
  • Developing Tomorrow’s Innovators – Dow embraces the importance and value of investing in STEM education. We help prepare and energize a diverse and robust future workforce by cultivating interest in STEM subjects, inspiring students to pursue STEM careers and accelerating their readiness.

Whether through the dedication of time, talent or expertise, volunteering promotes a positive employee experience, further supports Dow’s global citizenship priorities and investments, and ultimately, advances our ambition. We do this through purpose driven programs and investments such as MLK Day of Service, the ALL IN ERG Fund, Pulling Our Weight and our Global Volunteer and ERG Participation Policy.

What are some of the key learnings you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

Dow’s participation in and placement on the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia is a recognition of our progress, because it allows us to be measured among the best in the region and motivates us to continue to achieve progress and results. It is further evidence for what we already knew – business succeeds when employees and communities thrive.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia provides a regional standard for corporate citizenship. Regardless of size, it showcases how companies can use their time, skills, and resources to drive social impact within the company and across the region. The community created through the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia provides a platform to learn and innovate towards progress.

How has your company adapted in the last year to the changing needs of our community?

The world continues to evolve, including our company and the communities where our employees live and work. We continue to listen to our stakeholders and drive focus in how our global citizenship priorities and investments, in particular, in the areas around our manufacturing and R&D facilities in Pennsylvania and Delaware, can create meaningful impact.

Across the board, community engagement was integrated into business functions, with the highest percentage in workplace DEI programs and marketing and PR. Share one or two examples how your company has led in this field.

Many challenges that we face as a society are inextricably interconnected: social inequity, climate change, waste in our waterways, declining biodiversity, and the need for clean water and air among them. By working at the intersections of science and sustainability, culture and accountability, Dow is partnering with others to encourage new thinking and advance ESG priorities that matter to our customers, our employees, our communities and our business success. Two examples where we are doing this includes:

Our Business Impact Fund, founded in 2016, brings together nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs, and Dow customers, partners and employees to tackle many of society’s biggest challenges.. For example, in Philadelphia, green bike lanes using cost-effective and durable traffic paint. Dow used its newly developed DURATRACK™ 2K Technology on roughly 35,000 square feet of new bike lanes in the Philadelphia area. The green bike lane coatings offer the handling and sprayability of a waterborne system, while also providing performance and durability. This innovation yields superior adhesion to concrete and asphalt surfaces, skid resistance, UV durability and resistance to snow-plow abrasion. The technology also is quick-drying, which helps enhance work-zone safety through a speedy and efficient installation process. Plus, the new traffic paint technology is projected to cut cost per mile by around 80 percent, which will hopefully lead to more miles of green bike lanes.

Dow continues to expand our commitment to address plastic waste. As part of this, through Pulling Our Weight, comprised of global waste cleanup campaigns and educational events, we raise awareness with employees, communities, customers and key stakeholders around responsible waste management and engagement of humankind to address plastic pollution. Each year, we increase our goals to maximize impact. More importantly, we want to inspire year-long action to lead more sustainable lives.

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program:

The primary manifestation of our CSR program is the work we do, day in and day out, to provide solutions to our clients. Our work is either for the public sector or for an entity in its interface with the public sector. So while we are accountable to our clients, we also play a broader public role to provide substance and insight on contemporary issues. We are honored to serve our clients and educate the public in ways that provide clarity to otherwise contentious debates to advance our communities in a sustainable and equitable manner.

Furthermore, very often we offer discounted pricing to or accept in-kind compensation from our not-for-profit clients, as a way to further invest in efforts that yield a better and more just society. We have found that this “north star” approach to our work creates significant value for our clients. And, it engages and energizes our employees, who are eager to work on and contribute to values-led projects. Ultimately, while we are a for-profit company, we define our success as doing work we can be proud of, that lifts up our clients and that advances our community. This creates a commitment to excellence and civic-mindedness that we are proud to stand by.

What are some of the key learning you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

We are proud to be a two-time member of the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia, particularly as it has put us in the company of so many other admirable employers. Being educated and motivated by them has been an amazing learning experience for our firm, even as it creates some discomfort when it is revealed how far we fall short in so many ways when compared to such a high-achieving peer group. Creating a community of like-minded employers who can gain inspiration and insight from each other, and who can push each other to greater impact is one of the greatest benefits of the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia. Whether the benchmarks are innovative ideas or quantitative performance levels, they challenge us to do better and to be better.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

We have been delighted to participate and to win, so we strongly encourage others to do this. The exercise is a healthy one for internal purposes to see how you stack up in different facets of being civically minded. Those fortunate enough to win then receive significant external benefits by becoming part of such an impressive peer group. It is a process and a platform worth engaging in.

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program.

At Slalom, we help people and organizations dream bigger, move faster, and build better tomorrows for all. This is the core of who we are and what drives our CSR programming. We have centered our impact plans around three core pillars: Our Planet, Our Community Goals, and Our People. As a company working toward better tomorrows for all, we fully support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), which were presented in 2015 as a shared global blueprint for prosperity. Our sustainability and impact goals align with the UN SDGs, as we believe it is our corporate responsibility to advance them.

Each year, Slalom actively works toward goals that include collaborating with customers and partners to create a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world; reflecting the racial/ethnic diversity of our community by or before the end of 2030; and contributing our expertise, time, and money to reduce inequalities in communities around the world. Our Philadelphia employee resources groups and team members support organizations locally to further our work within these pillars. For example, Slalom Women runs workshops with TechGirlz to promote STEM education for middle school-age girls, our LGBTQ+ employee resource group creates internal and external programming on education and allyship, and we honor Black History Month with celebratory and educational month-long programming. At Slalom, we strive to ensure our people feel a strong sense of inclusion, belonging, and engagement to where we live and work.

What are some of the key learnings you gained, through participation in the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia?

Through Slalom’s participation in The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia Assessment, we have been able to continually revisit our local strategic initiatives that drive our global CSR impact and make purposeful programming changes to continue forward. Through our community volunteer efforts, pro bono client engagements, and local fundraising efforts and donations, we’ve been able to encourage our employees to give back in meaningful ways to the Philadelphia community. The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia helps highlight where our local employees have narrowed in on programming that means the most to them.

Our sustainability center of excellence has aligned with Slalom’s goals to reduce waste across all offices. This team has continued to implement various waste reduction programs, including composting and recycling, as we strive to achieve 100% participation in these programs across our physical spaces. Another strong area of interest for our team members is growing the endowment of the Slalom Foundation to make impactful grants in the future for our local communities. This includes our employees tapping into our Social Equality Initiative (SEI) grant program, which calls on our team members to nominate local not-for-profit organizations to receive grants in support of their work addressing education and economic disparities faced by individuals in underrepresented communities.

What would you share with a company that is debating whether to take the Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia next year?

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia Assessment provides an opportunity to examine Slalom’s local impact in alignment with our global CSR pillars while giving us an additional benchmark from an external source to show growth year after year. The assessment has also allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of how our efforts align with other organizations of similar size and organizational capacity as we continue to develop our CSR programming. Furthermore, the assessment allows us to meet with other local organizations on their CSR initiatives and drives true and meaningful connections as we all work to create better tomorrows for all.

Describe the main initiative(s) of your CSR program.

Exceptional organizations are led by a purpose. Deloitte’s purpose is to make an impact that matters by creating trust and confidence in a more equitable society. In the US, their core commitments focus on Sustainability & Climate Change; Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion; Education & Workforce Development; Trust; and Technology Trust Ethics.

To amplify and advance their purpose, in 2021, Deloitte named their first-ever Chief Purpose Officer. The goals for Deloitte’s US Purpose Office are to consistently embed purpose in their organization’s strategy and deepen the impact and positive change they are making for their clients, people, and communities. In Greater Philadelphia and across the US, Deloitte has a long-standing commitment to Education and Workforce Development. They are striving to break the societal pattern of inequity, fighting historical injustice, and removing barriers to opportunity. They are focused on building bridges and pathways, evolving the way they work, and helping others do the same.

Deloitte is committed to advancing, supporting, and influencing efforts that help create opportunity and equity for all students and workers. This encompasses their own talent practices and their work with clients, as well as the pro bono, volunteer, and financial support they provide to nonprofit organizations.

Deloitte’s commitment to purpose highlights the fundamental motivation and culture of the firm to make a meaningful impact in the world. By integrating purpose into their decision-making, they are focused on creating a more transparent, equitable, and purpose-driven culture that guides their everyday experiences.
